Lot #1. SULPHIDE. . One of the largest sulphides I have ever seen. Figure is a feeding cow, with it's ribs showing. Very minor air bubble on the neck. Nice silvering. Well-centered. Pontil is well placed, on one side. There are three or four tiny hit marks on the surface, so I can't grade it as Mint, but the marble is so huge you hardly notice. Very clear glass. Super example. Germany, circa 1870-1915. 2-1/8". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $230-$475. Final High Bid: $210.

 

Lot #2. SULPHIDE. . Figure of a seated lamb. Figure is small for the marble. Average detail. Well centered. Small air bubble on one side. Three small and tiny moons, and one small subsurface moon (none of the viewing side without the bubble). 1-1/2". Near Mint (8.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $100-$200. Final High Bid: $80.

Lot #6. SWIRL. Solid core. English colors. Multicolor solid core, including two bands of aventurine green. Outer layer is sets of white and yellow strands. 5/8". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $50-$100. Final High Bid: $43.

 

Lot #7. SWIRL. Ribbon core. Superior example. Single ribbon. Opaque yellow ribbon. Four transparent bands of red on each face, a transparent band of green on each edge. Outer layer is a set of five white strands mirroring each ribbon edge. Exceptionally well designed and well executed with excellent symmetry. Surface is in original, completely undamaged and unmarked condition. 1-13/16". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $375-$750. Final High Bid: $440.

 

Lot #8. SWIRL. Joseph Coat. Superb Joseph Coat swirl. Subsurface strands of various shades of red, brown, orange, yellow, blue and white. Surface in great shape. 21/32". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Final High Bid: $160.

 

Lot #9. SWIRL. Ribbon core. Single ribbon core swirl. Core is opaque white with pink strands on the faces and blue bands on the edges. Outer layer is two sets of yellow strands, mirroring the faces. Lot #10. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Superior orange latticino core swirl. Excellent color to the core. Outer layer is three light blue bands alternating with three white bands. Surface is pristine. Stunning marble. 7/8". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $125-$250. Final High Bid: $120.

 

Lot #11. SWIRL. Divided core. Hard to find naked divided core swirl. Three band core. Each band is the same color scheme of green, yellow, white and blue. No outer layer. Surface has one melt spot but is otherwise in super shape. Exceptional example of this type. 1-3/8". Mint (9.8). Pre-Sale Estimate: $150-$300. Final High Bid: $140.

 

Lot #12. SWIRL. Banded. I've listed this as a banded, but I think it is really a divided core from near an end of the cane. Three opaque white bands in the marble. One has transparent black on it. Bubble filled glass. Surface is undamaged. 11/16". Mint (9.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $15-$30. Final High Bid: $20.

 

Lot #13. SWIRL. Solid core. Rare solid core swirl in colored glass. Base glass is transparent teal. Core is translucent yellow. Outer layer is two bands of translucent yellow strands. There is some unmelted sand in the marble. This one is a peewee! 1/2". Mint (9.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Final High Bid: $100.

 

Lot #14. SWIRL. Solid core. Naked solid core swirl. Core is two panels each of orange, green, white and yellow. Nice marble. 5/8". Mint (9.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $30-$60. Final High Bid: $65.

 

Lot #15. SWIRL. Ribbon core. Nice smaller single ribbon core swirl. Opaque fat single white ribbon. One edge has a pink band, and one has a blue band. The outer layer is two sets of yellow strands, set to mirror the ribbon edges. 9/16". Mint (9.4). Pre-Sale Estimate: $20-$40. Final High Bid: $55.

 

Lot #16. SWIRL. Solid core. Naked solid core swirl. Excellent core. Three bands of transparent blue on one side, three of transparent red on the other alternating with three yellow and three white bands.An absolutely super example. Two pinpricks. 11/16". Mint (9.4). Lot #19. SWIRL. Solid core. Stunning example. Opaque yellow core. Covered by transparent red strands. Outer layer is four sets of yellow and white strands alternating with two blue on white bands and two green on white bands. Exceptionally well made with excellent symmetry. A beauty. One tiny scratch. 1-7/16". Mint(-) (9.2). Pre-Sale Estimate: $130-$275. Final High Bid: $250.

 

Lot #20. SWIRL. Solid core. This is an extremely rare marble. Not only is it a left hand twist swirl (!!), but it is in light blue glass. To find one would be rare, to find both is virtually unheard of. Base glass is light blue. Fat opaque white core with three transparent blue bands alternating with three transparent green bands and three transparent pink bands. Outer layer is seven opaque yellow strands. There is space for two missing strands. The core and the outer layer exhibit the same left hand twist. The only defect to the marble is that there is a small melt area on one side near the bottom pontil. This spot is in the same area as the missing strands, indicating that this marble might be from near the end of the cane. What can I say, except that this is an absolutely unbelie Pre-Sale Estimate: $250-$500. Final High Bid: $161.

 

Lot #21. SWIRL. Peppermint. Nice peppermint swirl. Opaque white subsurface layer with two wide transparent dark blue bands and six transparent pink bands. Surface has one tiny pit. 21/32". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $50-$100. Final High Bid: $100.

 

Lot #22. SWIRL. Joseph Coat. Outstanding example of a Joseph Coat in super shape. Subsurface bands of orange, blue, white, green, yellow, black and red. Two very tiny pinpricks. Super surface. Large size. Almost impossible to find this large in this condition. 1-3/16". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $300-$600. Final High Bid: $390.

Lot #24. SWIRL. Custard. Translucent white and pink base with transparent pink bands stretched on the surface. One small subsurface moon. 3/4". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $40-$80. Final High Bid: $80.

 

Lot #25. SWIRL. Banded. Super marble. Transparent very light amber base. Two subsurface layer of bright bands of red, yellow, light blue and white. One band of those colors near the core. English colors. One tiny subsurface moon. 29/32". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $50-$100. Final High Bid: $55.

 

Lot #26. SWIRL. Divided core. Three band core. Each band is the same color scheme. Pink, green and blue bands on white. Outer layer is three sets of six yellow and white strands, set to mirror the clear spaces in the core. There is a small melt spot on the surface. Also, two tiny subsurface moons. The marble is remarkably clear and the surface is clean except for those two hits. Unfortunately, I cannot grade it as Mint because of those two hit marks. 1-9/16". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Lot #27. SWIRL. Banded. Very colorful banded swirl from near an end of the cane. Transparent clear base with bands of brown, white, light green, green, light blue, purple and yellow. Some bands end just before the top. Tiny moon and some very tiny pitting. Germany, circa 1870-1915. 11/16". Near Mint(+) (8.8). Pre-Sale Estimate: $40-$80. Final High Bid: $28.

 

Lot #28. SWIRL. Peppermint. Nice peppermint. Subsurface opaque white layer. Two wide transparent blue bands, four narrow pink bands. Seedy glass on one side. Has a small subsurface moon. 9/16". Near Mint(+) (8.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $35-$70. Final High Bid: $32.

 

Lot #29. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Nice, large, white latticinio core. Outer layer is four blue on white band alternating with four orange bands. Two tiny subsurface moons, a couple of sparkles and some surface pinpricking. Still, a real beauty and looks great. 1-13/16". Near Mint(+) (8.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $175-$350. Lot #30. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Orange latticinio core swirl. Nice shade of orange. Outer layer is four bands of the same color scheme of blue on white. Some minor pitting and very tiny chips on the surface. A couple of cold roll creases. This is one of the largest orange latticinio core swirls that I have ever seen. 1-31/32". Near Mint (8.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $30-$600. Final High Bid: $260.

 

Lot #31. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Very nice latticinio core end of cane (last off cane) swirl. The upper two thirds is a yellow latticinio core, the lower third is a white latticinio core. A cane end that was stuck to the top of another cane. One large chip near the bottom and some melt spots. Still, hard to find example. 21/32". Near Mint (8.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Lot #32. SWIRL. Divided core. Four band divided core swirl. Each band is the same color scheme of pink, green, white and blue. Outer layer is four sets of yellow and white strands. Set to mirror the clear spaces in the core. Surface has several small chips, moons and subsurface moons. 1-3/8". Near Mint (8.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Final High Bid: $75.

 

Lot #33. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Very nice, large latticinio core. Core is white strands. Outer layer is four sets of bands. Each band consists of a transparent pink band and opaque yellow strand, edged in either transparent green or transparent dark blue. The marble is double twisted, giving it a caged effect. Some rippling on the surface, caused in manufacture (glass was just a little too cool when made). Has a number of small and tiny subsurface moons and two tiny flakes. Still, views very nicely. 1-15/16". Near Mint (8.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $180-$375. Final High Bid: $125.

 

Lot #34. SWIRL. Solid core. Nice end of cane (last-off-cane) swirl. Core is four panels in two different color schemes. Double twisted. Outer layer is four yellow strands alternating with four white strands. The very bottom has part of another swirl attached to it, where the end of this cane was attached to the butt of another cane. Nice marble. Several small chips and flakes. . 13/16". Near Mint (8.3). Pre-Sale Estimate: $55-$110. Final High Bid: $55.

 

Lot #35. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Interesting yellow latticinio core. Outer layer is four multicolor bands alternating with four bands of yellow and white strands. Nice design. Surface has overall chips. 1-9/16". Good(+) (7.8). Pre-Sale Estimate: $35-$70. Final High Bid: $60.

 

Lot #36. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Large white latticinio core swirl. Six outer bands. Three pink on orange and three black on white. Pretty marble. Surface has been buffed, pontils are intact. 1-11/16". Pre-Sale Estimate: $70-$140. Final High Bid: $90.

 

Lot #37. SWIRL. Solid core. Lot of three marbles. English type. Each has a baby blue solid core. Outer layer is different on each. One is three white bands, two yellow bands and a red band. One is three yellow bands and three white bands. One is three yellow bands, a blue band, a red band and a green band. One Mint, two Near Mint. 11/16". Mint (9.9) to Near Mint (8.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $80-$175. Final High Bid: $120.

 

Lot #38. SWIRL. Solid core. Lot of two marbles. Rare pair of matched swirls, off the same cane. Three layer solid core. Opaque white core. Middle layer is pink and blue bands. Outer layer is sets of yellow strands. Very unusual in that the core is incomplete on each. These may actually be consecutive marbles from the same cane. Each shows some minor rubbing. One has a couple of tiny flakes, one has a small chip near the bottom. Nice pair. 27/32". Near Mint (8.6) and Near Mint (8.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $65-$130. Final High Bid: $60.

Lot #40. SWIRL. Latticinio core. Yellow and white alternating latticinio core. Outer layer is six bands in two different color schemes. The surface has been heavily polished and the remnants of subsurface moons remains. These are hard to find, especially this large. 1-15/16". Pre-Sale Estimate: $50-$100. Final High Bid: $130.

Lot #46. END OF DAY. Panelled onionskin. Superior four-panel onionskin with mica. Opaque white core. Two panels of pink spots, one of blue, one of green. Slight lobe on each panel. Some left-hand smearing of the spots, but it is a right-hand twist. Mica sprinkled on the panels, but not heavy. Surface is great, except for one 1/16" scratch and one 1/16" rubbing spot. Superior example. You will be hard pressed to find one that is this size in better condition. 2-1/4". Mint(-) (9.2). Pre-Sale Estimate: $1750-$3500. Final High Bid: $1360.

Lot #52. END OF DAY. Panelled onionskin. Larger onionskin. Very clear marble. Great coloring. Four panels. Opaque white core. Two panels of pink and yellow. Two panels of blue, with some pink. There is some mica on the core, but not much. Hardly any twist. One small flake, two tiny flakes and atiny subsurface moon. Views very well, the damage is not readily apparent. A beauty!!! 1-11/16". Lot #53. END OF DAY. Cloud. Single pontil left hand twist cloud with mica. Transparent clear base. Opaque white core. Spot of transparent pink and some turquoise. Smeared to the left. Some finely ground mica on the surface. One 1/2" chip and two tiny chips. A real beauty that viewsvery nicely from almost all sides. Very hard to find. 2". Near Mint(+) (8.7). Lot #56. END OF DAY. Panelled onionskin. Rare large three-panel onionskin. Super example, although not Mint. Opaque white core. Equal size panels of pink, blue and light green. Super design and execution. Several flakes on the marble and overall haziness. Rare. 2-3/16". Good(+) (7.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $400-$800. Final High Bid: $410.

 

Lot #57. END OF DAY. Panelled onionskin. Larger four-panel onionskin with mica. Opaque white core. Two pink bands and two blue bands. Overall light mica. The marble has been polished and the remnants of some chips and subsurface moons remain. Pontils are mostly intact.1-3/8". Pre-Sale Estimate: $100-$200. Final High Bid: $160.

 

Lot #58. END OF DAY. Onionskin. Lot of four marbles. All are off the same cane. Consignor reports that he acquired eight together and is keeping the other four for his collection. Opaque white base with bands of transparent pink, green and yellow. Super marbles. One has tiny pit, rest are pristine. 9/16". Mint (9.9) and Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $175-$350. Final High Bid: $375.

 

Lot #59. END OF DAY. Onionskin. Absolutely outstanding end of day onionskin with mica. Core is predominately yellow bands, with some transparent pink, some transparent green and clear spaces. Overall blue spots. Core is covered with fine to medium ground mica. Slightly shrunken core onone side. Stunning core. Surface has been buffed and still has some very light, overall roughness. Pontils are no longer present. Still, a super and rare marble. Germany, circa 1870-1915. 3/4". Pre-Sale Estimate: $250-$500. Final High Bid: $150.

 

Lot #60. LUTZ. End of day onionskin. Opaque white core with transparent dark blue on it. Excellent lutz on the core. Surface is in great shape, with just a few manufacturing melt spots. Super looking marble. 3/4". Mint (9.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $250-$500. Final High Bid: $280.

Lot #62. LUTZ. Ribbon. Transparent green base. Opaque white ribbon with lutz on either edge. Super looking marble. Has one manufacturing flat spot with a little rough spot on it, and one very tiny moon. 25/32". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $275-$550. Final High Bid: $280.

Lot #65. LUTZ. Ribbon. Transparent green base. Fat single ribbon opaque white ribbon core. Each edge is a wide band of lutz, edged by white. One tiny moon (less than 1/16" inch), else the surface is pristine. Very nice example.19/32". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $225-$450. Final High Bid: $220.

 

Lot #66. LUTZ. End of day onionskin. A beautiful shooter onionskin lutz. Opaque white core with transparent green on it. Nice lutz on the core. Shooters are hard to find. This one has several subsurface sparkles. No damage to the surface though. Hard to find. Germany, circa 1870-1915. 7/8".Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $330-$675. Final High Bid: $250.

 

Lot #67. LUTZ. End of day onionskin. Opaque white core with transparent green. Nice coating of lutz bands. There is an annealing fracture on the core and a small chip on the surface. 25/32". Near Mint (8.4). Pre-Sale Estimate: $150-$300. Final High Bid: $111.

 

Lot #68. LUTZ. Banded. Transparent clear base. Two white edged lutz bands and four light red bands. There is a small chip and a tiny chip. The chip has caused a fracture through the entire equatorial plane of the marble. The fracture is only visible when viewedat just the right angles. 1-5/8". Near Mint (8.4). Pre-Sale Estimate: $200-$400. Final High Bid: $126.

 

Lot #69. LUTZ. Ribbon. Double ribbon. One face is yellow, one is light blue. Edged by lutz bands with white edging. Two subsurface moons and two small moons. Germany, circa 1870-1915. 11/16". Near Mint (8.3). Pre-Sale Estimate: $200-$400. Final High Bid: $200.

Lot #98. MISCELLANEOUS. Postcard. This is a postcard that I have never seen before. The postcard is Germany, printed in 1905, written and mailed in 1924. The front is a drawing of a street scene, of which the primary focus is two boys playing marbles. The postcard is hand-colored!! The drawing is signed by the artist and dated 1869. Postcards with children playing marbles are hard to find. This one is one of the few German ones that I have ever heard of. The postcard was written on and postmarked. Addressed to a man in Hartford CT. Appears to by his father. Asks for the funny papers to be sent over and sends regards to man's wife. Outstanding item, in superb condition. Mint (9.7). Plaque-style with eagle over top, date on two shields and title on bottom. Reverse of each reads "WinnerShreveport Times Marbles Tournament". With original ribbons. In original box with insert naming "The Metal Arts Co., Inc. These are from a group of seven found in Louisiana a couple of months ago. They were for various years and in various metals. The consignor states they were found in an old desk. I suspect the desk belonged at one time to a sponsor or officiate of the Tex-Ark-La tournaments. This one is pristine, although the box shows some humidity damage. Super find. I could only put this one Pre-Sale Estimate: $1000-$2000. Final High Bid: $975.

It is an opaque vaseline very light cream yellow. Extremely flourescent. Has a transparent spiral of the same color forming a "9" at the top and then spiraling with a nice tail to the pontil. This marble extremely rare!!! Large size. Only a little minor rubbing, no damage to the marble. Unbelievable condition, given its age. You would be hard pressed to find another of these. 1-3/8". Contains twenty five Snake Corkscrews. Four are white on clear, eight are green on clear, eight are yellow on clear. A similar box is pictured as "A" on Page 21 of Hardy's Akro book. He refers to it as #125 because the bottom with marbles is pictured as #125 in a 1930 catalogue sheet, reproduced on Page 10 of his book. In fact, only the bottom of the box with marbles is pictured in the ad, not the top. Typically, the No. 125 box has a top that is printed No. 125 on the flap. The marbles are certainly vintage to the box, but may not be original to it. Everything is Mint. Pre-Sale Estimate: $140-$280. Final High Bid: $335.

 

Lot #162. AKRO AGATE COMPANY. Original box. Original No. 15 cardboard box. Rectangular. Box top is a printed basketweave design with a trapezoidal cellophane window. One edge reads "15 No. 15 THE AKRO AGATE CO. Clarksburg, W. Va.". Another edge has the Akro logo (shaded "A"). Minor rubbing at edges. Interior has a cardboard insert, not the metal one seen in the red No. 15 box. This box never contained marbles. Was intended to contain fifteen slags of assorted sizes. Box is 4-7/8" x 3-7/8" x 1". This box was originally sold at the first Philadelphia MarbleFest auction in 1993 by us. It is the only one known to exist and may be a prototype. The red No. 15 box itself is very hard to find.
