Black line around the equator bisecting a continuous black garland. Interestingly, the blue is a salt glaze, while the black is painted. Two tiny glaze defects from touching other spheres during firing. Absolutely superb marble, you would be very hard pressed to find a better example in better condition. Very rare opportunity. See page 21 of Marble Mania, upper left fora similar example, in worse condition. Also, page 103 & 104 of Carskadden's Chinas shows similar examples, again in worse condition. Interesting box of twenty four dyed dense clays. Box is 3" x 2-1/2" x 5/8". Cardboard. Printed in red and green. "The Mammoth Box of Marbles 'Sunnyvale'" "Assorted colours". My guess is that it is either German or English, possibly Dutch. Probably 1920s-1930s. In great shape. Pre-Sale Estimate: $100-$200. Final Bid: $170. Lot #205. NON-GLASS HANDMADE. China. Lot of fourteen marbles. All are glazed handpainted chinas with six bullseyes. Two red, two black, two Wedgewood blue. All about 5/8" and Mint. Contained in a cardboard box, hand-block printed in a chinese motif. Consignor feels that the marbles may be original to the box. I think he might be right. The box would hold eight rows of four marbles (thirty two), perfectly, which would be correct for a solitaire board. The box is older in my opinion, certainly first quarter of this century. Box is in great shape. Pre-Sale Estimate: $325-$650. Final Bid: $210. Lot #206. MISCELLANEOUS. Box. Old paper covered cardboard box. Paper is block printed in a two color geometric motif. Printed on the bottom is "36 / 149 Made in Germany". My guess is that it originally contained thirty six clay marbles of some type, probably 3/4" or just under.. Bottom corners are split. 3-3/4" x 5-1/4" x 3/4". Near Mint(+) (8.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $150-$300. Final Bid: $80. Lot #207. MISCELLANEOUS. Neckglass. Necklace of twenty four 3/4" glass beads. Beads are handgathered white, turquoise with some purple. Very similar to transitional marbles. Probably Czech, first quarter of this century. Pre-Sale Estimate: $50-$100. Final Bid: $110. Lot #208. MISCELLANEOUS. Perfume package. One of the oddest marble-related items that I have ever had. Small cardboard tube containing ten perfume sample ampoules. "Connoisseur" "The sweet romance of a single blossom" "Authorized Rebottler NIPS Inc. N.Y. 16 N.Y.". What makes this marble related is that the tube has a 1/2" Peltier Glass Company Rainbo encased in one end. I have no idea why the packaging was made this way, except purely as decoration. The marble appears to serve no functional purpose, and it does not seem to be related to the perfume or its name in any manner. About 4" long. Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $30-$60. Final Bid: $55. Lot #209. MISCELLANEOUS. Tournament medal. Bronze medal. Plaque type. Two kids playing Ringer in front of a grandstand. Ribbon reading "National Marble Tournament" along the bottom. Two shields at top reading "19" and "38". Eagle above. Nothing on the back. Purple and white ribbon attached. Pinback was detached from ribbon at some point, a safety if stitched on, but it appears to be almost as old as the medal. Medal is a bit worn, slightly bent and has a dark patina. Comes in the original brown presentation box. Silk bed, printed inside with the name of the Chicago medaleur who presumably distributed it. Box is Mint, medal is Near Mint. Pre-Sale Estimate: $300-$600. Final Bid: $190. Lot #210. MISCELLANEOUS. Statue. Three part plaster statue. Finished to resemble green patinated bronze. Each piece is a boy shooting marbles, when placed together it shows a marble game. One boy has a small chip on his cap bill. Two of the statues have a paper pasted to the bottom that read "Muriel Moore, 87 Fairmount Avenue, Chatham N.J. My guess as to age would have to be prior to 1970, probably earlier. Each about 5" wide, 8" tall. Pre-Sale Estimate: $60-$125. Final Bid: $250. Lot #211. MISCELLANEOUS. Tournament ring. Very rare marble tournament championship ring. Tiny sterling silver ring. 11/16" diameter. Small shield at top for engraving owner's initials. Inside reads "Cleveland Press Marbles Champ Sterling". Very rare. Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $500-$1000. Final Bid: $320. Lot #212. MISCELLANEOUS. Jewelry. Sterling silver tie bar. Has half of a divided core swirl on it. Stamped on back with "Sterling" and a castle logo. Handmade by Larry Castle. Probably early 1990s. About 4" long. Pre-Sale Estimate: $65-$130. Final Bid: $25. Lot #213. MISCELLANEOUS. Agate seal. Agate seal. Turn of the century, used for stamping the sealing wax on an envelope (before envelopes were gummed). Banded agate handle in a very nice carving. Silver collar. Carnelian agate seal intaglio of a bird. Seal is 2" and Mint. Pre-Sale Estimate: $125-$250. Final Bid: $135. Lot #214. MISCELLANEOUS. Game board. Solitaire game board in a wood box. Mahogany board. Exceptional workmanship with a black Fox and Geese quadrant, and nice inscribed lines between holes. Board is about 11". Comes in a wooden box, constructed with a hoop inside to hold the board and allow marbles to be stored in the corners. Excellent piece. My guess is 1890s to 1910s. Pre-Sale Estimate: $225-$450. Final Bid: $135. Lot #215. MISCELLANEOUS. Game board. Odd game board. Wood hexagon. Concave dish carved in the center. Six score wire bales, three still have paper score number. Three guard bales. Nail sticking up in the center, presumably some sort of spinner fit on it at one time. Top outer edge of the hexagon has a wood and wire post fence. About a foot across. Origin unknown. I suspect first quarter of the century. Pre-Sale Estimate: $100-$200. Final Bid: $65. Lot #216. MISCELLANEOUS. Game. "Tip I Tip Marble Game". Very nice, old wooden game. Base with a board that raises. You drop a marble in the top cup and it zig zags down through cups to the base and scores points. Board depicts three clowns standing as a tower. Base depicts a caricature of an Oriental man with fan balancing on a chair. Some paint flaking. Missing the wire bales for the score area. About 14" long and 14" high. Bears an 1892 patent date. Pre-Sale Estimate: $300-$600. Final Bid: $170. Lot #217. MISCELLANEOUS. Game board. Solitaire board. Interesting painted board. Wood. Primed white. Green edge. Yellow center. Marble holes are pink. Nice stenciled black and green ivy vine pattern. And some red. Very colorful Country American board. Some paint chipping. About 9" diameter. Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Final Bid: $120. Lot #218. MISCELLANEOUS. Print. Print of Jim Daly's picture that shows children playing marbles. This is the smaller sized print that was available. Matted and framed. Print is about 6" x 4" (sight), frame about 12" x 8". Very nice. Mid 1980s I think Pre-Sale Estimate: $50-$100. Final Bid: $31. Lot #219. MISCELLANEOUS. Sheet music. "The New Game of Spin-Jenny". Whirl-it type game. Cardboard box with nice graphic. Contains small wood board, five foil clays and a wood top. In super shape. 1900-1920. Pre-Sale Estimate: $60-$125. Final Bid: $35. Lot #222. TRANSITIONAL. Ground pontil. Excellent handgathered dark purple and opaque white marble. Nice "9". Super pontil. A couple of cold creases. 3/4". Mint (9.7).
