Lot #2. SULPHIDE. . Figure is a pocketwatch. Roman numerals on it. Hands point to 11:40. Snowflake design on reverse of watch. Reeded rim. The clasp is mostly broken off prior to insertion. Lot #4. SULPHIDE. . Figure is a man and a woman sitting and cuddling on the ground. The woman is reading a book, the man is looking over her shoulder. Lot #5. SULPHIDE. . Figure is a handpainted man seated on a potty, his bedclothes hiked up to his waist (presumably performing his morning constitutional). Exceptional detail to the figure. The hair and the neck of the bedclothes are painted light brown. Well centered. No air bubbles. Some tiny chips and pits around the marble. Outstanding and rare figure. 1-7/16". Near Mint(-) (8.0). Subsurface layer of white. Two panels of pink dots and two of blue dots. Some burnt green in the outer clear layer. Beautifully faceted pontil. One tiny melt spot. One extremely tiny sparkle. Top end flap reads "Christensen Agates Gropper Onyx Marble Co. 225 - 4th Ave., NYC". Other three sides have marbles. Includes ten Christensen Agate slags (5/8", Mint) and 15 dyed clays (9/16", Mint). Lot #234. OTHER MACHINE MADE. Original box. Small crate constructed of pine planks. Box is about 12" x 6" x 4" (approximate). There is an end label pasted on one end. Reads "1000 5 for 1 Cent" "LUCKY MARBLES" "Braley Midland Co. Inc. Catlettsburg, Ky.". The consignor states that this crate was found in an abandoned store, and that it contained a number of the Peltier Glass No. 5 boxes. However, based on the end label, it is my opinion that this was not a Peltier shipping box. Rather, this is a stock box from a jobber or distributor. It is probably mid 1930s to mid 1940s. In my opinion, it was originally filled with Alley or Ravenswood common swirls. At some point the marbles were sold or removed and the box was used by the store owner to hold the Peltier boxes. Label has some very minor damage. Pre-Sale Estimate: $100-$200. Final Bid: $50.

Lot #251. CONTEMPORARY HANDMADE. Fritz Glass. "Half and Half". Top is a ribbon core swirl, bottom is a Joseph Coat swirl. These are two cane ends that Fritz fused together and made into a marble. Signed "F 99 1-1". "1-1" means that he only made one of this design. 1-5/8". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Final Bid: $65.

Lot #253. CONTEMPORARY HANDMADE. Beetem Glass. "Banded Lutz #3". This is a prototype for Beetem's new banded lutz series. Signed "G Beetem P 99 c 3" (Geoffrey Beetem, prototype, 1999, copyright, 3rd marble). According to the consignor only fifteen were made and Beetem retained almost all of them. 1-9/16". Mint (9.9). Lot #254. CONTEMPORARY HANDMADE. Rolf and Genie Wald. Transparent clear base. Red core. Outer layer is a sixteen bands of blue, white, yellow or lutz. Signed "Wald 97". 1-7/16". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $40-$80. Final Bid: $50.

Lot #255. CONTEMPORARY HANDMADE. Zephyr Glass/David Salazar. Extremely rare marble. Moon and Stars. White base. Yellow stars, irridescent yellow stars, irridescent yellow crescent moon. Unsigned. This is a very early David Salazar marble (late 1970s, early 1980s). According to David, when he first started out, hewas producing work at Zephyr Glass in Santa Cruz. He made marbles for them and they allowed him to use their equipment. This marble is unsigned, however, last year I sold one in CyberAuction. That one was also unsigned, but it had an adhesive label on it which was from Zephyr Glass in Santa Cruz. The style is clearly David's. Subsequent to that sale, I spoke to David about them and he confirmed that he produced them, but that he didn't make many of them. 1-3/8". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $400-$800. Final Bid: $335.

Lot #260. CONTEMPORARY HANDMADE. . Lot of ten marbles. Sulphide numerals #0 through #9. Each marble is 2-1/6" diameter. These were made in Italy in the late 1960s and imported into the United States by a New York importer. Very hard to find. Each marble is Mint. The earliest "Contemporary Marbles", these pre-date the California contemporary handmade marble pioneers. Pre-Sale Estimate: $750-$1500. Final Bid: $550.
