Lot #1.SULPHIDE. .

One of the rarest sulphides I have ever seen. Figure is the crouching bear grasping a pole. Excellent detail to the figure. Annealing cracks in it. Well centered. No air bubbles. The bear is surrounded by transparent brown glass. The outer layer is a very thick layer of transparent clear. Poorly polished, has faceting. Stunning and rare marble, I have never seen a heavily cased colored glass sulphide before. 1-7/16". Pre-Sale Estimate: $2750-$5500. Final Bid: 1400.

 

Lot #2.SULPHIDE. .

Handpainted sulphide. Rare marble. The figure is an angel, kneeling on one knee, cloth draped across other leg, holding a lyre or other harp-like instrument up to his right ear. Green ground, blue wings, brown hair, black eyes and mouth. Very rare. Above average detail to figure. Some very shallow tiny air bubbles, but nothing covering much of the surface. Well centered. There are some air bubbles floating in the marble. Some very tiny chips and pits. Super marble.. 1-7/16". Near Mint(-) (8.2). Pre-Sale Estimate: $2250-$4500. Final Bid: 2075.

 

Lot #3.SULPHIDE. .

Exceptional marble, very rare. Figure of a standing dog in colored glass. Figure is in above average detail. No air bubbles, well centered. Glass is transparent amber. Excellent shade, not bright, not dark. One tiny melt spot, two tiny pits. Exceptional example, rare opportunity. 1-1/4". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $2000-$4000. Final Bid: 2100.

 

Lot #4.SULPHIDE. .

Human figure, from the waist up, on a pedestal. Arms crossed over chest. Variously identified as Beethoven, Chopin, or a European statesman. Exceptional detail. Large figure. Well-centered. Small air bubble on the back of the neck. Two small subsurface moons on the right side of the marble, not in front or behind the figure. No other damage!!! Excellent pontil directly below the figure. Huge marble!!! A 1-7/8" polished example sold in Block's Box Absentee Marble Auction #36 as Lot #31 for $787.50. This example is almost a half inch bigger and in far better shape!!! 2-1/4". Lot #5.SULPHIDE. .

Figure is a plaque. Bust of President James Garfield on one side and President Chester Arthur on the other. Oak branches around each head. Heart shape plaque. More than likely this is actually a memorial piece, not a campaign piece as is more commonly believed. President Garfield was assassinated in 1881 and succeed by his Vice-President, Chester Arthur. The oak branches edge the Garfield side, whereas ribbons edge the Arthur side. Minor annealing fracture in the plaque. No air bubbles, set slightly low. Two brown spots on the President Arthur side. Polished marble. 1-7/16". Pre-Sale Estimate: $1000-$2000. Final Bid: 400.

 

Lot #6.SULPHIDE. .

Figure of a gentleman, standing in front or on a stump (politician), holding his top hat on his chest. Excellent detail. Some small air bubbles on the figure. Tiny air bubbles in the marble. Well centered. Some tiny chips and tiny subsurface moons.. 1-1/4". Good(+) (7.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $500-$1000. Final Bid: 350.

 

Lot #7.SULPHIDE. .

Very rare figure. Standing man. Looks like it might be a kind of clown, but I think perhaps it is a Swiss or southern German peasant. Outstanding detail. Excellent facial features, standing, with right hand in pants pocket. You can even see that the clothes are baggy!! Excellent detail. Slightly off center. Surface has a few tiny pits and very tiny moons. Looks great. 1-1/4". Near Mint(+) (8.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $1500-$3000. Final Bid: 800.

Very interesting, large, three-layer divided core swirl. Core is four bands. One is green and white, one is pink and yellow, one is a narrow yellow band, one is a narrow white band. Probably from near an end of the cane. Middle layer is a set of yellow strands and a set of white strands. Two other sets missing. Outer layer is two subsurface bands of smeared white. White latticinio core swirl. Slightly "smokey" base glass. Outer layer is two bands of pink on yellow and white, one blue on yellow and white, one green on yellow and white. Small cloudy area in the base glass near the bottom, probably from near the end of the cane. A number of small subsurface moons. 1-11/16". Near Mint(-) (8.0). Rare box. "100 Assorted Royal Akro Agate Marbles No. 0". The box is brown "marbleized" design. Shaded "A" logo. Excellent graphics. Box in great shape, just a little edge rubbing. Label is pasted on the end flap to cover the printed description (probably Striped Onyx). Contains one hundred Royals (two-color patches) in five different color schemes. Twenty of each. Box is about 6" x 6" x 5/8" and Mint. Marbles are 5/8" and Mint. Super box. This was consigned by the person who also consigned a similar box to the December 2000 Block's Box Absentee Auction. Extremely rare original 12-count Comic box (no marbles). Very few known to exist. This is a red box (yellow bottom). With original red insert. Printed paper covering cardboard. The top has on split corner, and there is rubbing at all edges. The bottom has rubbing on the edges. In remarkably good shape, given it's age. These are almost impossible to find, the number I've seen in all my years of collecting, I could count on two hands. Super find!!! Near Mint (8.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $1750-$3500. Rare original box. Yellow and red graphics. Thin cardboard, one oval. Reads "10 PIECES DAZZLERS GLASS MARBLES FOREIGN" on both sides. End flap has a logo for ELGEE reading "TRADE MARK L.G. LTD. B.HAM FOREIGN". Contains catseyes and a ribboned. Marbles are Japanese, the box is a jobber box from Birmingham England. Pretty hard to find. My guess is 1950s. Box is about 2-1/2" x 1-1/4" x 9/16". Limited Edition Prototype Royal Filigrana. Slate grey core. Subsurface bands of lutz and black with colored strands. Stunning. Signed "Beetem P 2001c 1/8". This is a premium piece and is numbered one of eight. Beetem made five different filigrana canes in different color combinations. He produced eight marbles off of each one.
