Figure of a running rabbit. Large marble and large figure. Above average detail to figure. Well centered. No air bubbles. Two tiny subsurface moons on one side. Excellent example. 2-1/16". Near Mint(+) (8.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $175-$350. Final Bid: $255.

3D Lot #2.SULPHIDE.

Figure of a running rabbit. Base glass is light green. Excellent detail to the figure. Set slightly off center. Tiny air bubble on the center of the body on one side. Surface has some rippling. 3D Lot #3.SULPHIDE.

Figure is a galloping horse. Large figure for the marble, it fills it completely. Excellent detail. Figure is set slightly back. Small air bubble under the figure on one side. Small annealing fracture in the glass in front of the figure on the other side. Surface flake on the side with the annealing fracture. A couple of tiny pinpricks. 1-9/16". Near Mint (8.5). 3D Lot #4.SULPHIDE.

Figure is a standing rooster. Excellent detail to the figure. Small air bubble between the back of the head and the front of the tail feathers. Set slightly low. One very tiny moon. 1-11/16". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $125-$250. Final Bid: $90.

3D Lot #5.SULPHIDE.

Figure is a standing cow. It's fat and it's happy, has a nice smile on its face. Above average detail. No air bubbles. Set slightly off center. 1-13/16". Mint (9.8). Pre-Sale Estimate: $225-$450. Final Bid: $270.

3D Lot #6.SULPHIDE.

Figure is a furry bushy-tail dog. I don't know the breed, I'm not a dog expert. Excellent detail to the figure, nicely centered. No air bubbles. A couple of very tiny pinpricks. 1-3/4". Mint(-) (9.2). Pre-Sale Estimate: $150-$300. Final Bid: $350.

3D Lot #7.SULPHIDE.

Figure of a standing cow. Not quite as fat and not quite as happy as the cow in Lot #5. Above average detail. No air bubbles. Nicely centered. Some unmelted sand on one side of the marble. 1-3/8". Mint (9.8). Pre-Sale Estimate: $125-$250. Final Bid: $75.

3D Lot #8.SULPHIDE.

Running squirrel. Small air bubble on back. Very nice detail. Well centered. Surface covered by small subsurface moons and tiny chips. 1-3/16". Good(+) (7.7). Pre-Sale Estimate: $55-$110. Final Bid: $32.

3D Lot #9.MISCELLANEOUS. Sulphide mold.

These are commonly identified as sulphide molds. White porcelain square with an inset circle on either side. One circle has a relief of a pig in it. This is a master mold that would have been used to make mirror mold that the item was cast in. It is not known if these were actually used for sulphides or to produce other toys. 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" x 1". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $75-$150. Final Bid: $40.

3D Lot #10.SWIRL. Divided core.

Four band core. Two are transparent pink on white, two are transparent green on white. Outer layer is four sets of three yellow strands. One tiny melt dirt dimple on the marble, otherwise in original condition. Super example, and large. 2-1/16". Mint (9.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $500-$1000. Final Bid: $195.

3D Lot #11.SWIRL. Latticinio core.

White latticinio core swirl. Outer layer is eight bands. Four are transparent pink on yellow, two are transparent blue on white, two are transparent green on white. A couple of tiny melt spots. Still has the consignor's original inventory label on it. Superb example. 1-13/16". Mint (9.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $300-$600. Final Bid: $150.

Outstanding large swirl. White latticinio core. Outer layer is six bands. Three are dark purple and white. Three are pink and yellow. One sparkle, one pinprick. 1-5/8". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $225-$450. Final Bid: $175.

3D Lot #13.SWIRL. Latticinio core.

Rare color. Core is alternating white and red latticinio strands. Four red and sixteen white, in sequential order. Outer layer is seven bands. Three are yellow (there is a fourth yellow missing), two green, two red. Beautiful design. Surface has a number of tiny and small chips, and pits. 1-5/8". Good(+) (7.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $250-$500. 3D Lot #14.SWIRL. Divided core.

At first glance it appears to be a coreless swirl. However, there are three bands in the marble, that are so far out from the core that they float just under the subsurface bands. The three bands are pink and green on white, there is a fourth missing. The outer layer is four bands of pink and blue on white, flanked by yellow, edged on one side by green. Very interesting design. One very tiny chip. 1-5/8". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $175-$350. Final Bid: $80.

Three band divided core swirl. Each is the same complex pattern of blue on white, pink on yellow, separated by green. Outer layer is three sets of yellow and white strands. One very tiny sparkle. 1-9/16". Mint (9.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $275-$550. Final Bid: $120.

Three-layer divided core swirl. Outstanding design and construction. Core is three bands, each pink on white. Middle layer is three bands, each green on yellow. Outer layer is three bands, each consisting of three white strands, separated by two yellow strands. The bands within each layer are equidistantly spaced and are situated to mirror the spaces in the layers below. Faceted pontil. One tiny manufacturing pit, one tiny moon. Super marble. 1-3/16". Very rare alternating orange and white latticinio core swirl. Twelve orange strands and twelve white strands. Not that ruddy orange or orangish/yellow you usually see, this is a nice strong orange. Outer layer is four bands. Two are blue and yellow, one orange and green, one orange and blue. One melt pit, one sparkle. Superb. 15/16". Mint(-) (9.1). Pre-Sale Estimate: $150-$300. Lot of two marbles. Matched pair of same cane marbles. Outstanding pair. Each is a ten-panel Joseph Coat.Transparent clear base. Subsurface layer is five panels of packed blue strands and five panels of not as tightly packed white strands. Two blue panels each has a red strand in it. One marble has a melt line. Four-panel Joseph Coat. Transparent clear base. One panel of packed white bands, one panel of packed light green bands with some yellow strands, one panel of white and blue bands. Very rare twelve-lobe single pontil cloud with mica. Transparent clear base. Subsurface layer is opaque white with splotches of transparent pink. A couple of dozen tiny pieces of mica. Marble is single pontil, so there is clear space at the top. There are twelve lobes that start at the bottom and continue about three-quarters of the way up the marble. A couple of tiny flakes,tiny subsurface moons and a couple of tiny rough spots. Extremely rare. 2-3/16". Near Mint (8.4). Pre-Sale Estimate: $1500-$3000. Final Bid: $1550.

Transparent clear base. Blue and white core. Subsurface layer is opaque white with stretched blue on it. Left twist with a reverse twist top. Slightly shrunken on one side. Transparent clear base. Opaque white subsurface layer. Slightly shrunken on one side. Two panels of stretched dark blue spots. Two panels of "chunky" red spots. Bottom pontil was broken off cane and then ground. Faceted with "break chip" on it. Overall, perhaps a half dozen pits or tiny chips. Beauty. 1-7/8". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $325-$650. Shooter red mica, one of the largest I have ever seen. Dark red, almost looks rust, but shine a light through it and you get a gorgeous currant-red color. Nice layer of subsurface mica. Small cold roll area at the top pontil. Beautifully faceted bottom pontil. In superb shape. Wow! 31/32". Mint (9.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $2500-$5000. Final Bid: $1200.

Opaque black base. Two bands covering about thirty percent of the surface. Each is subsurface white strands, covered by a band of transparent blue and a band of transparent green, edged by white bands. A couple of tiny pits. 25/32". Mint(-) (9.1). Pre-Sale Estimate: $80-$175. Final Bid: $42.

3D Lot #68.OTHER HANDMADE. Indian.

Opaque black base. Two bands covering about fifty percent of the surface. One is white and light blue, other is mustard yellow. 23/32". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $65-$130. Final Bid: $110.

3D Lot #69.OTHER HANDMADE. Indian.

Opaque black base. Six wide surface bands. One each of pink on white, light blue, yellow, purple, white and a very thin blue. There is some flaking of the pink on the white. These are very hard to find. They used to pop up from time to time, but no one knew their origin. It is now known that they are German. 11/16". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $300-$600. 3D Lot #70.OTHER HANDMADE. Indian.

Transparent Indian. Light transparent teal base. Two bands covering about sixty percent of the surface. One is stretched white, other is stretched yellow. 11/16". Mint (9.8). Pre-Sale Estimate: $40-$80. Final Bid: $29.

3D Lot #71.LUTZ. Banded.

The only thing I can call this is a lutz-less banded lutz. It looks just like a banded lutz, but it is missing the lutz. I have never seen this before. Transparent clear base. Four narrow red bands. Two wide white bands with a golden color in the center. It looks like the maker was trying to mimic lutz, without using goldstone. Very unusual. Very rare. 25/32". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $250-$500. Final Bid: $110.

Topping the column is a small perfect air bubble. The column looks like a man in a suit and the bubble looks like a space helmet, so the consignor has called this his "George Jetson" marble. Pictosphere. Transparent clear base with a sulphide flying saucer in it. Two thirds of the marble has a subsurface layer of dark blue, with embedded cane pieces in it. The cane pieces are stars (including the Big Dipper), comets, planet Earth, Saturn, man in the moon. Cane reading "Ro" and an illegible date cane also embedded in the layer. 2-3/4". Mint (9.9). One of the Animal Skin series. This is the White Tiger. These are made using the Graal technique. Each design is a replica of an actual animal skin at the Smithsonian. An Animal Skin. This is the rarest Matthews marble you can possibly find. It is an error, and it is an Artist Proof. This is the Ocelot. It is one of three that was made from a cane. However, the marble is an error. When laying the mask of the spots on the background layer, the rod was inadvertently flipped over. The spine that is supposed to be on the top of the abdomen is over the underbelly background (big spots on white) and the underbelly spots are on the top background (little spots on brown).This is the only error cane that is attributable to Matthews that was saved. He discussed this in the talk he gave at the Amana Marble Meet 2001. At first the error was not realized, when it was the pieces were discarded by Matthews assistant.After retrieving them from the trash, Mark signed, dated and noted them as Artist's Proof. There were only three marbles produced. Mark Matthews has kept one, another was sold in Amana by him to a private collector. This is the last of the three. Mark says that he has never released an artist's proof before and that this is the only error that he is aware of that he has ever made that was not destroyed.
