TP Lot #30.SWIRL. Divided core.

Extremely rare marble. This may be the best defined example of this type I have ever seen. Naked divided core swirl. The base glass is transparent cherry red!!!! This is extremely rare. The core is four opaque white bands, each rotated ninety-degrees so that they are perpendicular to the surface (as opposed to the more typical parallel to the surface). Nice tight twist. The bands are all about the same size and are evenly spaced. You find this type of marble rarely, and then usually the glass is a lot darker and/or the bands are not very symmetrical. This one is extremely well made. Three melt "pulls" on the surface (where it touched others when hot). A little pinpricking. 25/32". Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $650-$1300. Final Bid: $285.

The outer layer is completely filled with a blizzard of finely ground mica. Absolutely gorgeous marble. Faceted pontil. There is a line of melted air holes and a couple of pits on it. But, you have to look really hard to see them because of the mica. An outstanding marble. Extremely rare, a good opportunity. 1" (a hair under). Mint(-) (9.0). Pre-Sale Estimate: $750-$1500. Final Bid: $600.

TP Lot #51.LUTZ. Banded.

Transparent clear base. Four light blue bands, two white-edged lutz bands. There is a small are of additional melted glass on the surface with a small piece of yellow glass in it. The marble must have been laid against a piece of glass on the table when it was made. The surface is in great shape with the exception of a tiny subsurface moon directly on the bottom pontil. Some very minor rubbing on the marble surface and one very tiny sparkle. I'll have to grade it below Mint, due to the hit to the pontil, but in fact it views a lot better than that. If it weren't for that tiny hit, it would be graded in the mid to upper 9's. Very hard to find these big ones. 1-7/16". Near Mint(+) (8.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $600-$1250. Final Bid: $460.

Each is an orange center, flanked one side by light green and white, and the other by blue and yellow. It has one very tiny flat spot on one of the bands where it was laid down when out (the weight of a marble this size caused a tiny crush). If it weren't for that flat spot, I would have called it perfect and a 10.0 (the first auction marble I would have ever graded that way). 1-13/16". Mint (9.9). Pre-Sale Estimate: $8000-$16000. Final Bid: $6700.

TP Lot #65.NON-GLASS HANDMADE. Crockery.

This is an extremely rare marble. It's construction is the same as a lined crockery, rather than a mochaware. That is, it is constructed of three different colored clays, all rolled together, rather than a crockery base with slip surface (as a carpet ball is made). This one is white, brown and black. Very dense marble, on the order of a stoneware marble or a carpet ball, rather than a bennington. Unglazed. Exceptionally rare marble. 1-1/8". Mint (9.5). Pre-Sale Estimate: $400-$800. Final Bid: $360.

Cardboard box. Metal corner tabs. Label on top printed in red "No. 0 - 500 Pcs. Agate-Marbles Imitation. Made in Germany". Contains eighty-nine blue benningtons. The marbles are 17/32" to 9/16". The label would indicatethat the box should contain five hundred marbles. However you couldn't even fit five hundred peewee benningtons in the box if you wanted to. So, I'm not sure what the label signifies. I suspect that the label may have originally been intended for a bigger box and the German exporter stuck it on in order to meet United States import labeling requirements for country of origin. Or perhaps it was in intentional deception. Box is 3-5/8" x 2-5/8" x 2". Mint (9.6). Pre-Sale Estimate: $200-$400. Final Bid: $130.

TP Lot #68.NON-GLASS HANDMADE. Mochaware.
